National Pro Am
If you’re an avid Golfer at present or have been previously, then you would be familiar with Pebble Beach, home to the famous annual National Pro Am staged in February each year which has some of Americas most famous celebrities playing alongside the worlds best Golf Pros.
The event was originally started by self proclaimed Golf Tragic’s Bing Crosby along with his great mate Bob Hope.
This event which is great fun to watch on TV, plays at three different courses in the preliminary rounds – Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Spanish Bay, with the final at Pebble.
I was very fortunate many years ago, to have played all three of those courses which are all great and very memorable, but Pebble is special, a standout.
Like other great courses around the World , including Royal Melbourne, even years later, you can virtually remember every hole and Pebble does of course has many wonderful holes to remember – try the 7th for starters.
There were 8 of us and we had a truly wonderful experience with the Golf Round only topped by spending several hours on the Terrace overlooking the 18th green , where we were served by a wonderful waiter called Roland.
So after he reluctantly told us his name , he was greeted by a rendition of “Rollin , Rollin , Rollin“, where many of the others enjoying lunch on the terrace happily joined in.
Even Clint Eastwood would have been impressed.

Golfs greatest Zip Code
There are 7 courses in total located in “ Golfs greatest Zip Code “, but 4 of them are must plays for all those visiting the area. One course however – Cypress Point, is only available for visitors to play if accompanied by a member.
The 4 , which visitors can play and we highly recommend are:
- Pebble Beach
- Spyglass Hill
- Spanish Bay
- Poppy Hills
In order to play Pebble Beach , you must stay at one of the owner company’s Hotels:
- The Lodge at Pebble Beach
- The Inn at Spanish Bay
Now be warned, this ain’t cheap, with no bargains to be found, but if you can afford it, then you will not regret it, and the memories of playing these four courses will stay with you forever – yes, will stay with you forever.
Tourism commenced on the Monterey Peninsula back in the 1890’s with Golf courses commencing a few years later.
Pebble Beach – was created by a couple of leading amateurs Jack Neville and Douglas Grant and the basic outline has remained fairly similar ever since, with new technologies being utilised to keep the design up to date, to help cope with the clubs and balls used today, allowing players to hit the ball much further.
This situation applies to many courses around the world, where Par 4’s have had to be lengthened to become Par 5’s. Since the original design other notable Course designers have added their touch including:
- Alister McKenzie – also designed Augusta and Cypress Point
- Jack Nicklaus
- Arnold Palmer
With all due respect to those very distinguished gentlemen, with a outstandingly beautiful landscape to work with such as Pebble, I reckon that even I could come up with a stunning result.
- Spyglass Hill – is a Robert Trent Jones Snr design
- Spanish Bay – Robert Trent Jones Jnr with Tom Watson consulting
- Poppy Hills – Robert Trent Jones Jnr
The other thing to remember is that even if you are not a Golfer , then the Monterey Peninsula is truly one of the most beautiful and special places on this planet to visit .
It’s only a 2 hour drive South of San Francisco and makes a fabulous day trip, but even better stay for a couple of days. There are two wonderful towns in the area, Monterey which has many upmarket hotels , shops and restaurants , as well as the beautiful , picturesque and historic Carmel by the Sea , where Clint Eastwood was the Town Mayor for several years and also owned the famous Hog’s Breath Inn. Carmel has smaller boutique style hotels and it is simply wonderful to step back in time and just wander.
The area is also renowned for some oustanding homes which try and claim that they are Holiday Homes, but are truly fabulous mansions that have been in the same family for over a century.
Many are situated along one of the greatest stretches of real estate on this planet – Seventeen Mile Drive, so take a slow car ride along there and then tell me that your’e not impressed.
So, if your’e up for the best Golf Holiday going and you can find a couple of bucks to spare , then talk to us now and let us arrange an unforgettable Golf experience.
